OP8 The way to ensure teaching approaches incorporate a more balance of skills

[OP8]

To date, most of the English language instruction carried out in public schools has been oriented around reading and grammar skills. How do you think the next generation of teachers in Korea could ensure that teaching approaches incorporate a more even balance (and integration) of skills?

From the time English was introduced in Korea, the education to teach English was mainly focused on grammar and reading approaches. That's because there are no similarity between Korean and English, we cannot learn English like the way european do. Consequently, Korean English education has rested on written English not oral English. Thus most of Koreans, even those who graduated university, can't say a word in front of foreigner. To make the current educatoin system more practical in use, as the new generation of teachers, we need to be trained with new methodologies and the change of mind to think English not of academic subject but of skill.

Along with the change of the status of English, the proper methodologies to teach English in practical way is required in Korean English education. Reading and grammar is the past methodologies which is not practical any more. Now, the real ability to be able to communicate with those who speak English is the aim for learning English. In order to teach students like this way, teachers must change first. If there won't be right course corrections to teach teachers, teacher's college students who had already received old secondary and high school English education could be the same teacher who will repeat the same education they had. Therefore practical and useful courses like speaking and listening as well as reading and writing should be encouraged. After all, the newly trained teachers will make current teaching approaches more balanced one.

Based on that, the integrated English Education should be applied to school. For example, many activity-based courses need to make students feel comfortable and enjoyable. Through the process, teachers get rid of students' fear of afraid of English. Teachers don't intend to 'teach' English to students. They just help to increase students' English skills. In other words, when English is accepted as an ability to students not academic subjects any more, is the time the education integrates all of English skills. Because the refreshed mindset won't tie teachers and students up to impractical English abilities. It naturally leads them to balanced English teaching approaches.

A language is not restricted to one or two abilities. Scientists say that a language is an integrated ability of 4 skills but I want to add something to it. Language is closely linked to our lives, thus it is the thing we feel and act simultaniously. It would be easier to understand if take example with our mother tongue, Korean. We live in Korea with using Korean. However we don't notice it is a language. It is just the way to express ourselves and live with. So as to learn a foreign language, we should change our attitudes. When teachers can receive the appropriate language courses and we get to English as closer as possible and submerge ourselves in the middle of the language we're aiming for, we and our students' English ability wiill reach the most desirable level.

As you proposed, more competent teachers must be a big role in writing a new history of English education. As we adopt innovative approaches corporating balanced English skills, without qualified enough teachers, it might be nothing. I think OP 8 is just related with one of the most urgent problems to be improved. Apart from a great teacher, there has to be a big change making students learn more practical English in class.

I agree with your idea illustrated in 2nd paragrpah. Though the new policy demand English teachers should teach English in English, the teachers' college are not offering students sufficient training to prepare for it. The fact that teacher should continue developing their profession and teaching methods is obvious. However , the goverment should provide proper environment for teachers and preliminary teachers to offer good eduaction.
