Event - English Education in Korea is Evolving: Are You?

Post  Jason Renshaw on Fri May 16 2008, 14:51

I think this will be an interesting and informative event for all current and future Korean teachers of English. It's called English Education in Korea is Evolving: Are You?

Here's the link with more details.

Perhaps I'll see you there!

Best,

~ Jason

Let the good words spread around the peninsula!

It's really good to hear that other people will have a chance to know that you are here in Korea. Your informative presentation based on authentic research on the English education in Korea is sure to make them reflect on what the Engilsh teachers or instructors have done in their class. Also, through the brief 'presenter biolography' in the linked web page, i came to know you used to be president of KOTESOL Busan and Gyeongnam chapter. I used to be an 'active' member of KOTESOL Taegu-Gyeongbuk chapter with Dr. Garrigues(i am sure of the accuracy of spelling) and Dr. Chae, Junki when i was in college and for a few years after graduation. Anyway, i would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to you!

I heard that Sookmyung Women's University is well known for TESOL programs.
I am intersted in TESOL. This class will give me a good chance to visit Sookmyung Univ.
In Summer vacation, I may be in Seoul with my family so this information is very helpful.
Thank you, Jason.

Hyunjin, you changed profile photo. It looks beautiful.
I also took many pictures in Teddy Bear Museum of Jeju Island last year.
This photo remind me of good memory in Jeju Island.

Very Happy

Thanks Billy, Hyunjin and Yoobin!

I would encourage you all to attend Daegu KOTESOL meetings as often as you can. In my opinion, Dr. Garrigues runs possibly the best organized and most professional KOTESOL chapter in Korea.

I'm glad to hear some of you are considering attending the event in Seoul. I actually know all the other presenters really well, and they are top-class professionals who know how to do great seminars. Between the six presenters there (even though they are all foreigners), there is easily more than 40 years combined teaching experience in the Korean context.

You would need to hurry and register, though. The event was advertised on the Longman site for the first time last Friday evening, and by Monday morning there were already hundreds of people registered.

This whole event was actually my suggestion, and I pushed Longman to host and support it. From the start we wanted to target the important key issues facing Korean elementary and secondary school English classes now and in the future. From the high rate of registration, I think we have successfully caught teachers' attention!

You might like another suggestion I made to the organizers: free pizza for all attendees! (If you understand Korea at all, in order to attract people to an event, the best thing to do is add free food!)

Hope to see some of you there!

~ Jason

Thank you for the information

Thank you for letting us know about the event.

I've been always hungrer for that kind of lecture. I need some stimulation to make me upgrade myself. I think teachers have to be always diligent and upgrade themselves because the world has been changing every second.
I don't think I am ready for the Korean changing Enducation situation. I need a lot of help and advice.

I'm eager to be there if possible. Is there anyone to go there together?

Have a nice day!!

The event : English Education is evolving in Korea... will be a very fascinating forum because our teacher will be there as a VIP presenter. Furthermore, the place is Sookmyung University!! (쩐다^^) ㅡ the center of English immersion education. Whether this event may be a kind of advertisement for Sookmyung or not, I want to hear the main ideas and conclusion from somebody to be there. Sadly, most of us can't go there. That's too bad. Seoul is far away from Daegu.... Go for it, Jason. Best wishes for your presentation^^

Thanks for the vote of confidence Saangyung (and thanks for the well wishes from other students as well).

The location is Sookmyung, and the supporter is Longman, but all the presentations are completely independent. As for my TEE presentation, there will be some surprises for Korea's policy deciders... Thanks to my students at KNU, I have developed a very balanced view of things, and TEE is a very complex issue. I do have some solutions, but they are designed to be gentle and gradual, and win-win for current and future teachers as well as Korea's students. Is it possible? Let's see...

One interesting fact is that all the presenters are foreigners, but between the six of them, there is more than 40 years teaching experience in Korea.

Thanks again!

~ Jason
