Collaborative Essays on Teaching English in English (TEE)

Post  Jason Renshaw on Thu May 08 2008, 10:47

Using the papers you generated in class, please add a conclusion to the paper you took at the end of the class.

Your job now is to post the full essay here (press 'REPLY') and place your essay in this thread. Do NOT start a new topic for your essay, as I want all of them here in the one thread.

Please make a title for your essay, and under that indicate who the authors were (including yourself). Also write out the full topic before typing up the essay.

As the essay poster, you have the right to edit any or all parts of the essay. Such changes shouldn't be too dramatic, but can help to refine the essay to answer the original topic more clearly. Don't forget to add your own conclusion for the essay at the end.

Good luck! I'm looking forward to seeing the final results...

~ Jason

TEE and Private Education

Post  Inkab on Thu May 08 2008, 22:57

Do you think TEE can cut down the needs of private education? Present your opinion and support it with examples.

By Seyoung, Kanghoon, Jongwoo, Namsook, Heeyoung, Inkab

These days, English has been getting more and more important. Therefore, people living in Korea think that we need to change our English education in school more intensively. The government and people involved in English education try to change school system because parents always bring their children to cram schools or tutors for the better English. However, if it is possible to hire more English speaking teachers in the public school system, the need for going to private institutions like cram schools would decrease significantly.

The most important reason parents send their children to private English schools is to privide their children with extended exposure to genuin English. Through their own experiences, parents are fully aware that traditional methods of teaching English that are prevalent in Korean schools for decades will not actually help their children develop practical language skills, which should be acquired to survive the fierce competition in this global age. Introducing more English-speaking teachers to public schools will guarantee more opportunities for students to experience genuin English and from this perspective, parents would be less likely to spend money on private English education.

Moreover, Korean students take more than three English classes a week. If there are competent English -speaking teachers in public schools, students can understand all the parts they learn in English. Then, students will be able to manage time more effectively and spare more time to study other subjects in school too. Not only English but other subjects are also the reasons to let Korean student spend lots of money at Hakwon. Therefore, If enough classes for English lessons are given by English-speaking teachers, that will reduce the expenses for the tuitions for private education in general.

Finally, If various kinds of materials such as games, movies, songs and story books can be conducted by English- speaking teachers. it will reduce the need for the students go to private institution. In current shcool settings, students are learning English with regular textbooks, which is not quite enough to induce students' interest toward learning English. Moreover, students seldom have opportunities to perform English-related activities, which also is contrary to the private school settings. Therefore, interesting English teaching approaches presented by English speaking teachers can fulfil the necessity of going to private English institutions.

There is no chance to dramatically reduce the portion taken by private English education sectors in Korea . However, by introducing more fluent English teachers to the public school settings, we can expect to see parents are gradually taking off way-too-much burden from their children's English education, and build up the trust among English teachers, parents, and students

Strategies for mixed level of students in TEE class

Post  Jung namsook on Mon May 12 2008, 14:35

When students have difficulties in understanding the class taught in English, what strategies and methods can teachers use in this situation?

By Sera Jung, Sujin Youn, Seyoung Yoon, Kanghoon Kang, Jongwoo Lim, Namsook Jung

In some classes, whether itís an English class or not, there are always some students who canít get involved in the class because of the lack of their knowledge, or abilities. Usually theses students are willing to do their best in class, though it seems to be difficult to catch up with the class. Especially in the TEE class, this problem can be disastrous for those students. They might be capable of solving quizzes; however it would not be that easy to understand what the teacher says. This would let them down to give up learning therefore; teachers should help and encourage them with some strategies and methods considering their language proficiency.

Firstly, teachers need to make students comfortable, so they can speak in English without hesitation. Even in the TEE class, teachers would rather not force students to speak only in English. If they are not ready to speak in English, it will be the first thing for teachers to make students relax. Teaching in English and answering in Korean would be the way to get rid of some fear being involved in the class. During the process, students are able to naturally adjust the atmosphere of the TEE class. In the end, they will be led to speak in English by themselves.

Secondly, sometimes teachers should explain to those who donít understand regarding what they donít know in Korean. However, teachers should carefully use Korean in class because it could destroy the atmosphere of using English. Therefore, teachers explain what students donít understand in Korean. After that, teachers should explain it in English again to make sure that students understand it in English as well. Plus, it is possible, teachers get students explain what they donít understand in English for better English and developing English abilities.

Finally, active cooperation among students can enhance the situation. With thirty to forty students in one class, the teacher may not provide sufficient assistance to the students each time they have trouble understanding. If we consider that students with mixed proficiency levels are forced into the same class in Korean schools, it seems only natural that students with high level of English proficiency should help the students with poor comprehension. This strategy in commonly known as peer mentoring system, and it will serve as a highly effective complement to TEE policy.

To sum up, TEE class should be giving not only a further lift to less proficient students but advanced students. For this to happen, English teachers would be able to establish a comfortable classroom allowing students to use Korean for the lower level of English learners. Throughout the peer cooperation, students could also encourage each other to learn English in the class. Furthermore teachers will have to carry out a variety of methods for the balanced English education of all students.

How can TEE bring better results?

Post  Youn Sujin on Mon May 12 2008, 18:51

Why does learning English in English bear a better result? Explain your opinion with reasons and examples.

- By In-Kab, Hyun-A, Hwan-Ki, Se-ra, Su-jin

Ever since the government announced their new English education policy, there has been tremendous argument regarding advantages and disadvantages of conducting this policy in a public school setting. However, it seems to be obvious that TEE would be beneficial for improving students' language proficiency in terms of productive aspects of English learning, reducing gaps among the students from different socio-economic classes. Consequently, it will allow more chances to the students after they complete their formal education.

First of all, it's clear that TEE could help students' enhance their language proficiency. Most adults have learned English for many years; however, their English proficiency isnt' great compared to the period of education. It presents that we had some problem in public school. We need to change about language learning system. For example, we saw good speaker from foreign countries using English. In their countries, they learned English in English. Therefore, TEE is helpful for improving students' language proficiency including speaking proficiency.

Secondly, full exposure to the English speaking environment in school will help students to improve integrated English proficiency. Students need to develop their listening and speaking skills for following their teacher's instruction and the interaction in the class. If we start TEE from lower grades, students will have more chances to develop their skills by the time when they graduate highschool. In my opinion, this policy will guarantee the students proper exposure to English, which will play a key role in improving students' language skills.

Moreover, if students learn English in English, the assessment to estimate student's English ability might be changed to give more emphasis on speaking, listening, writing skills. In Korea, as the majority of English learning has been done focused on grammar, vocabulary and reading. Test was also conducted on the basis of that. This has resulted in students concentrating on just one aspect of English skills and being unable to communicate with foreigners in English. Students can be motivated to develop speaking, listening and writing skills more through the lessons and assessments based on the purpose of TEE.

In conclusion, the new policy in English education, which is aimed at TEE, would be a positive change in public education. Through this change, students will get more possibilities to be good English speakers. They will also be able to upgrade their integrated English proficiency through full exposure to English using circumstances. In addition, the policy may give flexibility in assessment, and the students will have more chances to focus on productive skills. Therefore, learning English in English will bring benefits to reinforce learners' integrated language skills.

the useful method for TEE class

Post  Kanghoon Jang on Mon May 12 2008, 19:03

What do you think the most useful methodology when we conducted Teaching English in English (TEE)?

By Hyun-A Ji, Hwan-ki Kim, Sera Jung, Su-jin Youn, Se-young Yoon, Kang-hoon Jang

TEE policy has been the one of the hottest issues in Korea since new government proclaims that this policy is going to be effective in 2010. For English teachers in Korea public school settings, the TEE is going to require lots of changes in teaching methodologies and strategies. I am going to provide one useful methodology in this essay that I think it is the most effective and give my reasons for it.

As the class will be taught in English, understanding of the class will be differed from all students on the basis of contents of the class. Teachers are required to prepare various instructions to cover broad ranges of level in case of when students have difficulties in understanding the class. For instance, when students cannot follow difficult rules of grammar, teachers have to use easier words and simple structures to help students for easier understanding. On the contrary, when students can acquire the lesson easily, teachers need to offer more challengeable English for them to develop their English and motivate them.

Teachers should also give examples of appropriate expressions and reactions. As TEE class is intended to use only English in class, the students need to know how to ask questions, how to make compliments on their classmateís work and so on. For example, I once took an English class, which was in TEE context. I could understand all the ideas taught in the class. However, I could not show that I had got the ideas, or I needed some more information. This could be helpful in getting knowledge, but not in improving language proficiency. To achieve the aim of TEE classes, enhancing learnerís English skill, the students should be given proper knowledge of expressing themselves.

On the other hand, in case of the students who can understand and speak basic classroom conversation, the strategy already mentioned is useless. In this case, teacher needs to advance the level of TEE class more academically. It is based on the fact that there is no problem for students to process the entire class only in English. More challengeable and motivated tasks such as translation, essay writing, newspaper reading and discussion should be covered. Students in this stage would be the perfect level to expect the best result of TEE class

In conclusion, we have been trying to know and find how to manage TEE classes in public school system. However, it is not easier to find ways than we expect. Throughout our class collaborations regarding that, we can suggest that we should think about the student levels of English to build up dramatic teaching methods when we apply for TEE classes. For example, for beginners, when the students cannot catch up what teachers teach in classes, teachers have to try to use simply structures and vocabularies for understanding. Plus, teachers should teach how to express studentís own opinions in English before starting TEE classes. For advance, teachers should prepare for difficult tasks mentioned before. If we consider this way conducting TEE classes, it would work out effectively.

How to Control Low Level Students in TEE.

Post  Young on Mon May 12 2008, 20:44

How can teachers control classes in TEE context when students donít fully understand what teachers teach?

By Seyoung-yoon, Kang-hoon, Jong-woo, Nam-sook, and Hee-young

Nowadays public schools are recruiting English speaking teachers. Local teachers will be supposed to teach students only in English. However, there are some problems that students are not same levels. That is, there would be some students who cannot catch up with lessons taught in TEE context. It is necessary for teachers to organize three helpful teaching methods for students in low level.

Teachers should prepare for Korean translations for students. Perhaps, for beginner levels, they may not understand and catch up with what teachers say in the class. At that time, teachers make them see translations and explanations about that in Korean to make sure that they understand and catch up with what they donít know. If they still donít understand, even though they saw translations and explanations in Korean, teachers should explain it in Korean and ask them about it using yes or no questions in Korean as well.

Another way of helping students with lower proficiency level is to adopt peer mentoring system. It is to assign students with high level of English proficiency to the students with poor comprehension as their mentors. This strategy is particularly useful in Korean public schools context, where students significantly differ in their levels of English proficiency. As teachers cannot attend simultaneously on every student who is in need of assistance, peer mentoring system will certainly increase the efficiency of any type of English class that is fully conducted in English. Furthermore, it will promote cooperation among students and help establish mutually supporting environments, resulting in lowering studentsí inhibition and anxiety.

The other way of supporting the students less proficient in English is that teachers themselves should try to use much easier words and speak more slowly than ever. Most students like to communicate and have fun in class. If English teachers adopt more inspired rather than commanding way , the students will read how he or she behaves in class. When communicating with others, words or texts are not the only ways, probably we have a wonderful eye contact and body language to work out the situation. For a student in need at TEE background, students should first show how they are in love with teaching in English and try their best to explain very well. If so, the student will more feel like attending English class voluntarily in the end.

All in all, in TEE context, teachers are supposed to teach in English and students have to catch and understand teachersí English teaching. Both teachers and students must be challenging to give and understand classes in only English. Furthermore, different levels of studentsí English proficiency make the classes in TEE context much harder to control. To help low level students understand lessons taught in English, there are effective ways that teachers do: preparing for Korean translations for students, adopting peer mentoring system, and using much easier words and speaking more slowly. By practicing these three ways, teachers can minimize the gap among studentsí different English levels. In my opinion, even though all students canít be fluent in English speaking, the English class where teachers and all the students interact well in English each other might be the best, ideal English class.

What are the prospective drawbacks?

Post  Seyoung Yoon on Tue May 13 2008, 08:18

What are the prospective drawbacks if TEE is being conducted in the near future, and suggest possible solutions for them

by Hyun-a, Hwan-ki, Sera, Sujin, Se-young

New governemnt announced their policies about TEE these days. It looks good apparently. If TEE is being conducted in near future, teachers should teach English in English, students should learn English only in English. It means every teacher must be able to use English as well as native speakers. Many people are worried about TEE regardless of its practicality. There are certain drawbacks if TEE is conducted.

Firstly, the limited proficiency of speaking English will discourage both teachers and students from having profitable class. Teacher has to explain everything only in English. However it will be impossible to give students accurate explanation for those teachers who cannot express or explain properly what they want to say in English. Also, students will have difficult time to understand teacher's explanation.

Next, though the government has claimed that this policy will be implemented soon, there are not any preparation or revision of the teacher's exam. Neither are training for teachers to improve their speaking ability, curriculum for undergraduate students in teacher's college and textbooks. Still, many students don't attach importance to improve their speaking ability rather than memorize some concepts in the textbooks. Therefore Teacher's college needs to prepare the courses for new policy. Teacher's exam also has to be changed to estimate pre-teachers' ability to organize class and teach English in English. Moreover it is necessary to edit current textbooks written in Korean.

Finally, it's also hard to expect that all of the stuents will be accustomed themselves to the newly changed TEE classes. Like teaches, students are not ready enough to take lessons in English, especially those who are in public schools. In public school, there are many students about 30 or more. We can't expect all of them having desirable English proficiency. Therefore students who are not good at English will more likely to get lost in Class. To help those students, the class should be reorganized.

Before the implementation, TEE system is showing many potential drawbacks ; determent of profitable classes, unplanned devising for new policy and poor consideration for the current level of students. Because English is the subject which is strongly influenced by personal experience, adjusting the level of students having different background is an ideal. This is the original problem of TEE policy that government have to be adapting for now.

Benefits and disadvantages about TEE.

Post  Hyun a Ji on Tue May 13 2008, 08:44

What are the benefits and disadvantages about TEE between students and teachers?
Based on this discuss how TEE would be beneficial and disadvantageous for korean English education.

By Jong-woo,Nam-sook,Hee-young,Inkab,Hyun-A

Ever since the new administration launched last March, newly-elected president Lee, myung-bak and his staff members, have constantly made it clear that they will force TEE in every korean school. Within the next few years, such plans have been welcomed by many as they believe that current public school system is not ready for such a drastic change. TEE certainly is an innovative way of teaching English whose effectiveness has been proved in many countries, but when it is implemented in unique korean contexts, it seems very obvious that it will not come without some disadvantages.

To begin with, students can easily take advantage of practical English at hand in school. When considering huge of family budget is wasting for private English education, it is substantial advance for a student as well as each family in Korea. Besides, students can be more interested in learning English with more natural and often usage of English rather than when they should stick to accomplish academic performance related to written English. On the other hand, there is also a weakness for the students who are not readily responding to a sudden English speaking environment. It might cause some students to fall behind when they are asked to perform practical English at school.

Next, not only students but also teachers benefit from TEE context. In current English education system which is reading-oriented, it is hard for teachers to use English. In other words, teachers studied very hard to become English teachers, but after achieving their dreams, they just teach English in korean. Honestly, I guess korean English education system blocks them from using English and makes their English speaking proficiency get worse. By teaching English in English, teachers are able to develop their English speaking proficiency through special programs from government. On the contrary, some English teachers are really reluctant to teach English in English. Probably, some of them are too old or some of them don't want to make themselves be embarrassed in front of their students. However if even these teachers accept new system, finally they will find themselves to be proficient in English speaking.

Nevertheless, If we go through the outwards from other countries who have conducted TEE for several decade, it seems obvious that it will benefit both students and teachers, as well as parents. With no doubt, students will improve their productive skills of English with constant exposure to spoken English in a school setting. Moreover, teachers can obtain genuine pride that they are boosting students' chances to utilize practical ability of English. Parents, of course, will be able to save huge amount of money the used to devote to private English education.

In conclusion, there are many kinds of benefits and disadvantage if we conducted Teaching English in English. If we conducted TEE, students could learn practical English easily, teachers constantly practice practical English. It's obvious we could get benefits through TEE. However we need to decide it carefully. Because it also has lots of concerns by many people. It's doubtful whether students could adapted to new way or not. We need enough time to check TEE , new government must not push radical policy to school. TEE is the hot issue in Korea, they should reflect our opinion, thoughts about TEE.

Collaborative Essay Writing

Post  Jongwoo on Tue May 13 2008, 09:14

TEE will require lots of adjustment in teaching methodology and strategies. Under TEE system, students may sometimes be totally lost, or teachers are forced to explain difficult concepts only in Enlgish. As an TEE instructor, what would you recommend to enhance those situations?

By Hwan-ki Kim, Sera Jung, Sujin Yoon, Se-young Yoon, Kanghoon Jang, Jongwoo Lim

Teaching English in English helps sutdents improve English abilities effectively as this strategy provides them with increased exposure to English. They can get more chances to practice their English, asking some questions and listening the class in English. However, when they learn some difficult concepts and theories in English, they might have difficulties following the class and even worse they might totally get lost, losing interests in learning English altogether. To improve this situation, teachers are required to implements some methods such as adjusting instructions to students' proficiency level, using various multimedia resources, and providing additional materials that enhance students' comprehension.

First of all, it is crucial to give instruction step by step. A teacher can explain some concept with the easiest expressions to help his/her students' understanding. If the expression is used repetitiously, learners become familiar with the concepts and expressions. Only then, they are ready to face more difficult learning tasks. As this process continues, students will gradually develop their language skills. Moreover, students will be less likely to get lost along the lesson.

Upon rescuing students who are confused and lost in the middle of a lesson, teacher must let students enjoy their learning experience. By using various multimedia resources, the range of students' vocabulary will get broadened. For example, in order to play a simple game, high level of English proficiency is not required. Instead, a few of selected expressions are repeated over and over. Thus, every student including those who otherwise may face difficulties, will enjoy the game in English. This way, students will get to experience what pleasure can TEE bring.

Finally, providing additional materials would be helpful for those who need explanations more about what they do not understand. Generally, Korean students are better at reading than at listening. For this reason, it is recommended that teachers should prepare for written scripts of their lessons that contain every comment they will be making in the classroom. This way, students' understanding will be improved drastically. In addition, it is beneficial for students to become familiar with English expressions and terminology that teachers commonly use in the classroom.

As we have observed, teaching-English-in-English strategy may confuse some students and this can be resolved with various methods. Considering students' proficiency levels, teachers should make their lessons comprehensible to the students. They should be cautious not to introduce too difficult a concept before easier ones. Futhermore, active use of multimedia resources will attract students' attention and enhance their understanding. Provision of additional materials for less capable students is another way to ensure the effectiveness of TEE strategy. There are many other techniques to maximize the efficiency of TEE classes, but we should not forget that the most important factor in the success of any strategy is teachers' attention to students' needs and wants.
